Background
TU, Tribhuvan University, the oldest university of Nepal had been established in 2014 B.S. which had and is playing vital role in education sector of Nepal. Pulchowks’ Engineering Campus, Maharajgunjs’ Teaching Hospital and Rampurs’ Agricultural and Forestry Campus (Currently AFU, Agricultural and Forestry University) are well renowned branches in Nepal and overseas, which is running by TU. In this mass next branch was/is being shadowed through many years though it was being established in 2036 B.S. (1979 A.D.) in Dharan. The Bachelor Degree in Food Technology, which is running under IOST by TU in Central Campus of Technology (CCT), Dharan.
Introduction
B Tech. Food Technology, commonly called as BTech. (Food) was established in 2036 B.S. (1979 A.D.) in Hattisar, Dharan, whose main objective is to produce food technology manpower. Before it’s establishment, certified level was introduced in 2030 B.S. (1973 A.D.) which was terminated in 2036 B.S. for establishment of BTech. (Food). This course is being run by TU under IOST. Moreover CCT, Dharan is only government campus where Bachelor Degree is taught and only a campus where its Master degree is taught. Rest there are 11 college under TU and a College of Applied FOod and DAiry Technology (CAFODAT) in Kathmandu under PU (Purbanchal University) where bachelor degree can be achived in this field.
Objective
There are several objective of the course, such as to produce food technology manpower. The few of main objectives of this course are:-
- To provide knowledge in food science and the principles underlying food processing.
- To provide food specialist in quarantine office, DFTQC (Department of Food Technology Quality Control Office) and its branch RFTQC.
- To provide wider knowledge to students in advanced food engineering.
- To provide skilled manpower in different food industries.
Career Opportunity
After being graduated, students can gain their place in following areas, within Nepal and even abroad;
- As food safety inspector, quality safety scientist and food engineer in DFTQC and its branch RFTQC.
- As food safety inspector and quality safety scientist in Quarantine Office.
- As operation manager and production supervisor in Different food processing industries.
- As food safety inspector and public health officer in NGOs’ and INGOs’ which deals with food and nutrition.
- Different standard hotels.
They can even establish their own food industry and develop new variety of food stuffs too.
Enrollment
The one who wishes to get enrolled in this field must pass ISc. or +2 Science or Certificate level of food technology/ laboratory technology or I.Tech. (Food) (it is stopped in Nepal by TU ) from TU or institute recognized by the university. All students are supposed to attain and pass entrance exam which will be held in Bhadra by TU.
